Injection Blow Molding Process

The plastic resin pellets are melted and two sets of molds are needed to form the part. First, plastic is injected into the preform mold which injection molds a contoured pre-form. The pre-form is then transferred on the core rod and inserted into a blow mold cavity and inflated. (Stretch blow molding uses the same procedures as injection blow molding, but prior to inflation, a stretch rod enters the preform and stretches it at the same time the compressed air blows the plastic to the sidewalls.) The mold opens and a fully-formed part is removed from the core rod. There is no flash in the IBM or SMB process.
